Moving Forward as a Disciple-Multiplying Church
He will…
How’s it going? I mean, with you and Jesus?
What is God teaching you in his Word? Any new insights, precious reminders, questions raised?
Here are a few thoughts on moving forward as a disciple-multiplying church.
Exodus
The people of God have multiplied! It’s happening just as God promised Abraham (Genesis 12, ,15, 17) But, all these dependents are slaves. They don’t know what freedom looks like, tastes like, feels like, much less do they know how to be a great nation, like what God promised.
He uses a leader over his people named Moses. He’s a murderer and deserter, raised by slave-owners. This fugitive coward, is called up to deliver and lead his people. He becomes murderer turned mediator to lead God’s people through the desert to the promised land (Yeah, great choice God! Convicted fugitive to lead your people, nice choice of representation).
It gets better…
He can’t even hold his arms up to win a battle over the Amalekites and needs two guys to hold up his arms for him! (Exodus 17:12)
Then his father-in-law lets him know how he’s doing leadership all wrong and tells him to find some qualified leaders to help him out. (Exodus 18:21-23)
This limited vignette on the person of Moses might encourage any leader whose felt less than up to the task of leadership. But that’s not the point. The Exodus story isn’t about Moses’ most improved leadership, or even the people of Israel and what happened to them on the way to the promised land. The hero of the story is God. God who said he will… and he does. He makes slaves into a nation. He makes a murderer into his humble mediator. He will for those who can’t.
In a few short chapters God proves himself faithful in all of the essentials.
“God, what about the Egyptian army coming to get us? We’re trapped at the shore of this Red Sea!”
BOOM, sea splits…Egyptian army drowned.
“God, there’s only bad water or no water to drink in this desert!”
BOOM, bad water made good, and rocks melted into water for all.
“God, where’s the food!? We’re starving out here!”
BOOM! Manna in the morning, quail in the evening.
Just before these amazing moments in the Exodus story, Moses gives us a trustworthy saying. Perfectly describing the God in one of the most encouraging and trust-inducing, faith-strengthening statements of Scripture. When Pharaoh is charging down the sand dunes, the Red Sea is blocking their escape, this is what he says,
BOOM, you can do nothing…but He will…
Love you guys,
