Breathe Well
We may naturally incline toward the knowledge of the Word or the expression of the Spirit, but without both, much is missed, especially in the life of the church.
Instead of a dichotomy of opposites, God designed them as unified functions, like breathing. In, then out. In, then out.
The respiratory system is not a system with a dominate function of either inhaling or exhaling.
The Old Testament is filled with God speaking to his people, but they would not listen to his Word.
In the New Testament, Jesus Christ gave the Spirit to understand and believe God's Word. It is overly simplistic, but it's like one huge inhale. Then, when Jesus' fulfills the OT promises, the Spirit is given; exhale.
Word first, then spirit. Spirit leads us into truth, truth leads us to live (worship) truly. In, out, in, out. Word...Spirit...Word...Spirit.
I love a long, deep drink of Scripture, but if I doubt the truth of it, it is really difficult to live what I've studied.
Similarly, a passionate and driven ministry to others that mishandles or even neglects the truth of Scripture cannot guarantee salvation to the lost.
May we, "receive with meekness the implanted Word which is able to save your souls," becoming hearers and doers of the Word - James 1:21-22. And as true worshippers may we worship in spirit and truth - John 4:23.
Breathing well together,
Loren
