Christian Community: Part 4
Over the summer, we will look at nine different practices of Christian Community found in Scripture. I'll talk about some of them, but I mainly want you to look up the Scripture passages and answer the application questions below. But...that's just the start. After answering the application questions, then go do it. Put it into practice in our Christian community.
First, what is the Christian community?
The people of God—those who are created by faith through his gospel. A Christian community consists of those who have repented and believed and have a shared experience of the gospel, a message of God's grace to sinners through his Son, Jesus.
The body of Christ - those who are members of one another, united in his eternal life. A Christian community consists of people who deliberately share life.
The fellowship of the Spirit - A Christian Spirit-filled community is an alternative society that models distinctive ways to do everything in life—a present, living model of his future.
Grumpy Host
I had just returned from a trip away from the family. The kids were in bed, and I was looking forward to a relaxing evening with the Mrs. As we were winding down for the night, she received a message. Three friends of a friend are stuck in Rome for the night and need a place to stay. Commence: my grumbling as we get three beds ready. Never mind that they are missionaries en route to/from their site of service. Never mind how grateful I would be if someone opened their home to me when I was suddenly overnighting in a foreign country. Nope, I was self-righteously justified in my grumbling. Then the Lord spoke through the passages below, the morning I was writing this newsletter together. Maybe he will speak to you as well, but I know my grumbling settled a little when I was reminded of him, who hosts me gladly, despite any inconvenience to himself.
Practice 4 - sharing one another’s space, goods, and time
Romans 12:13
1 Peter 4:9
Galatians 6:10
Application:
How does our community share one another's space, goods, and time? How do you share your space, goods, and time with your church family? Can you think of ways to put these passages into practice during the week?
Together in this Christ community with you,
